Essay Writing

Students often struggle to write analytically. This course will offer skills, strategies, and most importantly practice in and feedback on the students’ writing. Many of the skills taught will apply to all disciplines and types of formal academic writing.

 Grades 5-6 Sunday 6:45-7:45 pm EST
This course focuses on how to outline, develop topics, and write descriptive and detailed essays. Students will practice grammar and vocabulary building to aid their writing process. In addition, the students will develop a writer’s portfolio that includes a narrative, persuasive, informative and literary essay.

Ace the Essay Exam  Grades 7-8 Saturday 9:00-10:00 am EST                                                                                                                                                      This course will explore the timed essay technique in various disciplines including history, science, literature, and math. Yes, even math topics sometimes require essays, especially if you are asked to give a background of a famous mathematician and explain their contribution or theory. Here are some of the skills we will cover:

• Learn how to interpret essay questions correctly so that you answer everything that is asked.

• Learn how to do a five-minute preparation to block out how much time you will spend on each facet of the question. An incomplete essay does not earn an A, no matter how thorough you are in your initial paragraphs. 

• Learn how to pace yourself during the exam in order to cover every facet of the question.

• Gain valuable practice and evaluation in class.

• Learn how to critique your own and your peers’ essays using a rubric. In this way, you will become conscious of the way you craft your essays. Here, you can make mistakes and learn from them. You are not afforded this opportunity on an official essay exam!
