Picture Book Reading Class
Picture books represent a unique literary form that blends stories with art. They can hook children into a lifelong love of reading. The teacher leads children to read a different picture book in each lesson. The carefully selected books are entertaining, interactive and educational. With consistent modeling, interdisciplinary activities and guided practice, students learn strategies such as making predictions, making connections, inferring, setting a purpose for reading, visualizing, asking questions, determining importance, summarizing, and synthesizing.

Phonics Class
Phonics instruction teaches children how to decode letters into their respective sounds, a skill that is essential for them to read unfamiliar words by themselves. Effective phonics instruction is important because letter-sound knowledge is the foundation needed to build up reading and writing abilities. Students will start with short vowels, long vowels, and move on with readings including CVC(Consonant Vowel Consonant) words and word family stories. They will also learn vowel teams, blends and digraphs, etc. Students will use scrambled sentences, rhymes, and sentence fill-ins for practice.
