For students in 3rd – 5th grade with no coding experience.
Key concepts covered: sequentially execute a list of steps for a task; giving directions on a 2D map; comparing and selecting paths to avoid obstacles; drawing fun shapes using a turtle; fixing problems in a program through debugging; using sprites in Scratch; repeating some steps with a loop
Main objectives: Building up interest in coding and knowledge in basic concepts through fun game activities. Promoting AI for social good through many examples of how AI and robots can be used to help people and solve public problems. Introducing creative problem solving methods based on Stanford’s “Design Thinking” framework. Building a solid foundation in coding through group activities, discussions and extensive hands-on practices.
Class format: Small online class for no more than 6 students
Class time: Thursdays 5:15-6:15 pm EST
Ten lessons in each session.
Winter session begins on Thursday January 7, 2021. Spring session begins on March 18, 2021.
Students registered for both sessions will have the opportunity to join a LeapUp team to compete in the Grow with Google Scratch Coding Online Tournament in May 2021.
