Debate Online Camp

The camp combines instructional blocks with group discussions, drills, and games to keep everyone engaged as we dive into the debate world.

Students will learn how to organize arguments into a cohesive case, assess an argument’s validity/soundness, track responses and rebuttals, and compare the weight of competing impacts. They will also practice debate techniques and skills such as: how to choose arguments strategically, organize evidence for ease of use, set rhetorical traps during cross-examination, respond to unexpected arguments, assess an argument’s validity/soundness, and weigh nuanced impacts.

Sample activities:

• Research: Reading and responding to global, domestic, and age-appropriate news.

• Discussion: how to discuss controversial topics, navigate internet debate, and negotiate productively

• Debate scrimmages: Pubic Forum, Lincoln-Douglas, Parliamentary Debate, and Spontaneous Argumentation

• Cross-training: Mock Trial, Model UN, Radio Broadcasting, Storytelling, and Impromptu Speaking

• Strong models: Tracking and analyzing advanced debate rounds

• Games and exercises that train the brain’s ability to focus and make logical connections

• Mini-tournament!  Students compete for bronze, silver, and gold medals at the week’s top wrap-up competition
